Design Summary: “The Oval”

This artwork concept explores the human form within public space, drawing inspiration from Franz West’s sculptural approach. Central to the design is the oval—a symbolic and physical space where community gathers, friendships form, and local culture thrives.

The project responds to the unique characteristics and constraints of three different sites, using a consistent sculptural form derived from Jonathan’s hand-drawn impressions of each location. The selected design, when placed upright, becomes an elliptical frame—inviting interaction, framing the viewer within the “field of play,” and symbolising inclusion and community connection.

Material choices and scale are tailored to each site, with the artworks designed to be playful, inviting, and photogenic—encouraging engagement across generations.
