Mark Cuthbertson - Artist Statement.
Mark is a Victorian-based artist living and working on Wathawurrung Country. His multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, visual art, and set design, grounded in spatial thinking, material experimentation, and the realisation of large-scale, interdisciplinary projects. With a strong interest in time-based outcomes and the transformation of everyday materials, Mark’s work re-imagines the mundane into playful and thought-provoking forms that challenge conventional narratives.
Marks commitment to innovation in design is gaining national recognition through significant public art commissions and inclusion in private collections. Recent sculptural projects have focused on large-scale works using concrete as a primary material. Notable achievements include commissions for Marshall Train Station, City of Greater Geelong, Casey Council, and the Smorgon private collection. His work has featured in major curated exhibitions such as the Montalto Sculpture Prize, Lorne Sculpture Biennale, Wollongong Sculpture Award, and BOAA – Biennale of Australian Art. His inflatable installation Seeding for a Greener City was presented in Macau, China.
Mark also regularly collaborates with Back to Back Theatre, contributing design to award-winning productions including Ganesh Versus the Third Reich, Lady Eats Apple, Soft, and Food Court, the latter presented at the 2024 Venice Biennale, where the company received the prestigious Golden Lion.
