Jonathan Thompson - Artist Statement
Jonathan is a supported artist who has a lived experience of a disability, living and working in Melbourne, with over 20 years experience working across a variety of mediums and techniques. His sculptural work draws inspiration from the domestic world that surrounds him, the simple interactions with family and his broader community of friends, to popular culture and steamy midday television programming.
Jonathan draws on the human form and human interaction as a means to make sense of the world that surrounds him. Creating elaborate maquettes of forms and gesture, he endeavours to capture those fleeting moments of interaction and render them a-new.
Jonathan is a prolific artist, intuitive and spontaneous in his art making process. He has developed a bold use of materials utilising simple materials such as masking tape, aluminium-foil and wooden barbecue skewers.
Jonathan’s work captures a lovely fragility and spontaneity in both form & it’s materiality. With the finished maquette’s rendered in bronze or aluminium, the final artworks are truly exquisite in there elaborate surface detail and lush surface patina.
Jonathans artwork is finding strong support with recent selection in the Tom Bass sculpture prize in Sydney, arts funding support, commercial galleries, &Gallery Sorrento, QDOS arts, Lorne and several private collectors, who are all seeing great appeal in .
