Town of Huntington Events

Bald Eagles of Centerport Day
I was happy to ceremonially designate September 25th to be know as “Bald Eagles of Centerport Day” with my colleagues on the Town Board. Thank you to Robert Schwartz, the founder of the Bald Eagles of Centerport, for putting this amazing event together. All proceeds from the event will benefit WINORR- Wildlife In Need of Rescue and Rehabilitation.
Having a Bald Eagle on my shoulder was very cool however the look of fear on my face is REAL! Thank you to PSEG Long Island for their sponsorship of the event.
Honoring & Remembering Paul Johnson
What a beautiful day to honor and remember Paul Johnson. Paul was my friend; he was always there to advocate whether it was in the political or the governmental context asking “us to do better.” It is so fitting that this spot that we dedicate to him today was once a place he met with his Boy Scout troop and then a vacant lot. This is a sign of the importance of the revitalization of Huntington Station. I am so proud to be here today to dedicate this plaza to my/our friend Paul Johnson. It is well deserved.

Honoring Dylan Thompson for his Mobility Mat Advocacy

When I see beachgoers enjoying the Mobi Mats on the Town’s beach, I will fondly remember Dylan. He was so excited to see his idea come to fruition.
Government works best when we work together. On August 27, 2020, when he took the first ride on the mats, he said, "I am really grateful and happy that the Town has listened to me by making the Mobi-Mats available at 7 beaches. These mats are really going to help a lot of people, not just disabled beachgoers like myself. That really makes me feel lucky to have been able to help so many people."
Dylan Thompson 1993-2021
We are grateful to have had you as a resident and advocate in our Town.

Commemorating Huntington Heroes of the 9/11 Boatlift Rescue

I had the honor and privilege of recognizing the Captain and crew of the James Joseph for their bravery and heroism on 9/11. As the attacks on the World Trade Center were occurring, no one could have foreseen the extent of the devastation on that day. Captain James Schneider and the crew of the James Joseph Fishing risked their lives to go into Lower Manhattan to help in any way that they could. They rescued hundreds and hundreds of people that day. While everyone was trying to get off of Manhattan, these brave men ran towards the chaos. Their experiences from that day are an untold story that I am proud to tell today and honor them with a permanent plaque at Huntington Harbor. 🇺🇸

National Overdose Awareness Day

On August 31st, we raised 2 purple recovery flags on the Huntington Village Green for National Overdose Awareness Day, the world’s largest campaign to end overdoses. The flag will fly the entire month of September for National Recovery Month.  While the epidemic is international, the impact is personal. We must fight to end the stigma surrounding the disease of addiction and help those struggling receive quality care.
Special thank you to Sharon Richmond for all that she has done to turn the Town purple. Main Street and New York Avenue in Huntington Village are lined with purple flags that Sharon and her husband designed and donated for all in the Town to see, giving strength to people struggling with addiction and hope for people in recovery.

Larry & Donna Chancey Presented a Proclamation for Donating Wedding Gifts to the Helping Hands Rescue Mission

At yesterday’s Town Board meeting, I had the opportunity to present Larry and Donna Chancey with a proclamation. The couple had originally planned to get married last year but due to the pandemic had to postpone their plans. Larry and Donna invited friends and family to a backyard wedding celebration. Rather than accepting gifts from their guests, they asked that they bring items that could be donated to the Helping Hand Rescue Mission. In total, their guests donated over $2,000 along with numerous Stop N Shop gift cards, and a pickup truck full of good that were delivered to the Mission.
Thank you to Larry & Donna Chancey for so selflessly giving back to our community. Congratulations on your wedding; we wish them a lifetime of happiness.

The Love of Learning Montessori School Partners with Tusk and the African Conservation and Community Foundation

I was proud to meet these creative young students today as they graduated kindergarten and eighth grade! The Love of Learning Montessori School partnered with Tusk and the African Conservation and Community Foundation to help spread awareness and raise funds for conservation efforts and communities across Africa that were impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The students helped create a life-size rhinoceros and 4 large African paintings, which will be auctioned off in the Hamptons to raise the funds. All proceeds will be donated to benefit Tusk and the ACCF. For these kids, during the Covid-19 pandemic, to be so thoughtful to be thinking about the effects it was having on the wildlife in Africa is amazing.
