The old saying goes, "March comes in like a lion, and out like a lamb." March has definitely come in like a lion with its full winter blasts, but there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Believe it or not, the calendar shows we are almost officially at the first day of spring on March 20th!
Speaking of spring, check out the 2015 Spring/Summer Parks and Recreation Brochure on the Town of Huntington website. It's never too soon to start thinking about camps for the kids, or to browse the hundreds of activities for everyone in your household. Please click here to view the guide.
I hope that the Parks and Recreation Brochure will inspire you to look ahead to warmer days and the events that go along with them!
This winter has been an exercise in dealing with blizzard-like conditions, frigid temperatures, sleet, rain, ice and of course, snow. With the winter weather, we know how important it is to take extra precautions at this time of year to keep loved ones and property safe and secure.
An important resource with regards to snowstorms, hurricanes or other emergency related events is "Huntington Alert." "Huntington Alert" is the Town of Huntington's notification system for weather and public safety emergencies. It is used when the Town and its agencies need to provide urgent information and instructions. If you have not signed up, please go to the Town of Huntington website http://huntingtonny.gov and click on the “Code Red – Huntington Alert” symbol at the bottom of the homepage. The process only takes a couple of minutes and you can choose to be notified via email, text message, mobile or land line phone service.Read more

On January 1st, 2015; the Town of Huntington implemented its latest green measure in its comprehensive and expansive recycling program known as “Single Stream Recycling.”
In order to help educate our youth on the Town’s new Single Stream Recycling Program, I would like to invite all Huntington Township Middle Schools to participate in a poster contest that is open to grades 6 through 8.
The winner will have their poster featured in the Town of Huntington’s 2016 Environmental Calendar and the winning submission will also be used as an educational component to encourage local households to recycle.
“Single Stream” recycling means there will no longer be separate pick up days for comingled items, such as cans, glass, paper and plastic. Residents can place recyclables all in ONE CONTAINER on one designated day each week – town-wide.
The criteria for the poster contest will be as follows:
- Open to students grades 6 through 8.
- Students are asked to please register for this contest through their art teacher.
- Submissions should be 8.5”x 11.5”– un-matted.
- Submissions should be two-dimensional.
- Each teacher may submit up to three (3) works, from any one grade level, not to exceed nine (9) works for all grades.
- Art Teachers can register online at: www.HuntingtonNY.gov/PosterContest
- Teachers are asked to please contact Stephen Jimenez in the Council Office for submission collections at: 631-351-3171 or via email to: SJimenez@HuntingtonNY.gov
Registration deadline: March 20th, 2015
Submission deadline: May 8th, 2015
